Pre Requisites:
Don’t forget to back up your data. If you have synced the device with a Google account, then the contacts, calendar, Gmail, & select other Google-related data will not be lost and will come back after the next sync. However, you should backup anything you want to keep that is not stored on the SD card:
- SMS/MMS messages,
- Call Log,
- Bookmarks,
- Applications; use Titanium Backup or the Astro File Manager, for example,
- Any application data not on the SD card.

Steps to Root Samsung Galaxy Y
- Download the file Update.zip.
- Now copy Update.zip to the main directory of your SD card i.e. root.
- Turn your device off.
- Now to start the device in recovery mode by pressing Power, Volume Up and Home Button together.
- When you enter the recovery mode, select the option “Apply Update from SD Card” and select Update.zip which you copied to the root.
- After the process completes, restart your Samsung Galaxy Y.
- Download Busybox from here and install in on your device.
- That’s it, now your Samsung Galaxy Y is rooted.
Steps to Unroot Samsung Galaxy Y
- Download the file Update-Unroot.zip.
- Now copy Update-Unroot.zip to the main directory of you SD card i.e. root.
- Turn your device off.
- Now to start the device in recovery mode press Power, Volume Up and Home Button together.
- When you enter the recovery mode, select the option “Apply Update from SD Card” and select Update-Unroot.zip which you copied to the root.
